It is essential to use open source software tools for open content translation.

The open content community needs one unified platform that meets all needs

• Diversity in the market of tools is good.
• Very different needs, better tools for each
• We need specifications and open standards, but not one platform only.
• It is important to allow radical ideas to happen, and that can't happen in a unique platform.
• The open source community and people doing translation need a place where we can share info about what tool is good for what need
• Having one platform doesn't mean that the platform cannot be changed, copied and adapted. It could be both: one platform that is modifiable and doing different jobs.
• If there are open standards you can create all kinds of aggregators
• Example linux kernels, modified they are not compatible.
• Is there a single unified platform for anything that made everyone happy?
• When you are working on a team or a project, you pursue one single solution
• Passion comes from the fact that there's many choices.
• I would love to have it, just don't force me to use it.
• Central information is very useful to find the right tool
• There is some advantage to have unified tools, as long as you don't force people.

Anyone can be a translator

• I understand translation as taking something from your environment, process it and give an output
• I think everybody is translation
• Not everybody can produce a useful piece of work
• Not everybody speaks different languages, or different experiences o
• Not everybody can be a good translator now, but they can become one
• Everybody has translation needs, we have to understand the needs
• People can learn languages, there is a potential to be a translator
• We translate for our internal interpretations
• The existence of translation memory tools makes the possibility available for everyone to get the mean os something
• Everybody can write but not everybody is a novelist. It's labelling the person at translator... we can all translate.
• Just because you speak another language doesn't mean you can write in that language, it's an art form
• Everybody has a potential, but practically
• There are collaborative novels, there are collaborative translations
• Open content is about everybody collaborating, is telling everybody you can write and you can contribute. Doesn't mean your work will be in the final product.
• Collaboration is very important, there are not perfect tools yet, and we need to improve quality
• For practical reasons, at the moment, that would change the statement. If we see it from a philosophical frame of empowering users, I agree with the statement.
• Translation is a broad context. It is also important to remember that most of the world is bilingual at least. If you see wikipedia, with complex content, you'd think not everyone can add to that, but they do.
• There's a high bar, excellent translation needs expertise. But machine translation can help a lot of the average people and eventually improve quality.
• There are many assumptions on what people can have access to translation tools.
• How would the Internet be if we said that only writers could write for the internet?
