Some people use Performancing (http://performancing.com/) enables you to view your blog entry and the translation on the same screen. (Performancing is really a blogging tool first and foremost.) This then gets cut and pasted into Wordpress They have customised their Wordpress entry point

Most people do things directly in Wordpress. I.e. cut an paste the original post into wordpress and go from there.

We need to keep incorporating translation-specific tools into our customized Wordpress user interface.

Using their own simple CMS systems. Struggling with the structural and technical issues of how to build into the CMS models either how to build a replica of an entire site or a segment of a site.

  • Some people are using google translate
  • Identify what you're going to translate
  • Let everyone know that someone is transating a post
  • Upload the post
  • There are different systems for the different language sites
  • Now thinking that there should be space for people to comment on the quality of translations – by creating a tag which says 'click here for transation specific comments'

  • Follows the default open source workflow process through a CVS – version control system.
  • Developer marks code for translation
  • These are put into a PO file
  • These files are hosted with the source code
  • Are developing a new online workflow tool called Transifex http://transifex.org/ currently live at http://translate.fedoraproject.org/submit/.

What can the content world learn from the software world with versioning issues?

  • Wiki tools – there are versioning tools in Wiki's but people don't use them in that way
  • There are comment fields but people don't use them

They are thinking of starting to use PO files for documentation, not just for the interface.

What is the optimal interface layout of translation interface

  • In the open source world this is standardized – you have both the input window and an output window viewable on the same screen. They use Pootle http://pootle.wordforge.org/ and Launchpad https://launchpad.net/
  • What is the most natural interface for this? Is it personal or are there standard rules that are proven to work?

Elements you need on the screen;

  • Original text with a commenting system
  • Machine translation
  • Peer review
  • Terminology/glossary translation
  • Output/preview screen
  • Dictionary widget

Performancing software

Performancing is a blogging tools that allows you to send blogposts to different blogs from the same user interface. Its advantage to a blog translator is that it allows the translator to view the original text's website and the ouput window on the same screen.

We need to create something like Performancing for CMS'

It makes sense to put the workflow layer separate - outside the content layer.

Could content owners work with these common open source versioning tools?

AH – not necessarily; don't really want to have to build an interface with someone else's application rather than customising your own application

David – Its hard enough to get people over the learning curve of learning the CMS let alone getting them to log into a versioning system

Playing off the need to have accessible systems to encourage diversity and empowerment of contributors against the need for systems for

Adam – for translators you really need an elegant interface

We need to focus on interoperability and open standards such as using PO files

We could dream of a really nice inline PO file editor.
